In both cases the egoism of the unfortunate is strongly felt. The unfortunate are egoistic, evil, unjust, cruel, and less capable of understanding one another than fools. Misfortune does not unite people, but separates them, and even where, it would seem, people should be connected by the similarity of grief, much more injustice and cruelty is committed than in a comparatively contented environment.
